Sport Harnesses

Your harness is an integral part of your protective system - select one carefully to be sure that it meets all your unique needs. A secure fit and ergonomic design should be considered of key importance, as should adequate padding. Too much padding will result in constriction while too little will cause discomfort or restricted circulation. Tie-in points on a harness will largely determine the functionality of that harness. Consider:

1. Waist attachment - useful for rappelling and ascending. A low attachment is helpful for keeping rigging "out of the way" during work.

2. Sternal attachment - A higher attachment helps to keep the body upright when sitting in a harness for extended periods.

3. Dorsal attachment - A rear, between the shoulder blades attachment is the OSHA preferred point for use in fall protection. However, always be sure that a harness with this attachment also includes a front attachment to facilitate self-rescue in the event of a fall.

4. Shoulder Attachment - Used in temporary situations where the wearer needs to remain upright, such as in confined space.

5. Rear Waistbelt - An attachment here can be useful for fall prevention or for positioning. However, many harnesses offer rear-waistbelt attachments that are not full strength, so verify this attachment before using.

6. Side D-Rings - D-rings at the hip can be very useful for positioning. Normally these are used with a yoke, so that they are more or less equally loaded during use.
